Cult Cleanser: Clinique Take the Day Off Cleasing Balm

I am a cleanser addict. There is no denial: I hoard them and have at least four on rotation at a single time. I like to pick a cleanser depending on my skin, the amount of make-up I am wearing and my general mood.

The Clinique Take the Day Off Cleansing Balm has received rave reviews, so I was terribly upset to find that for some strange reason wasn’t available here in the Netherlands. After I bought my jar in the US, it seems to have been introduced here (it is on the Dutch Clinique website,Β but I haven’t spotted it at counters yet).

So, why is this a cult beauty product? It is a very simple fragrance free cleansing balm that works like a charm. It removes make-up – including waterproof or long-lasting products – with ease. The balm has a very soft texture, great for a little facial massage at night. It doesn’t leave any residue on the skin after use nor does it give you that awful tight dry feeling. The lack of fragrance means it is suitable for even the most sensitive skins.

This is a great all round cleanser suitable for every skin type. The lack of fragrance might put some people of, but I personally don’t mind as I have several other heavily scented night products in use at the moment. It is comparable with the Bodyshop Cleansing Butter, but the Clinique Balm is much softer and doesn’t leave a residue.

Despite my obsession with trying new cleansers, the Clinique Cleansing Balm has found a way into my permanent routine. A little goes a long way with this product, but given the spotty availability here in the Netherlands I might just buy a back-up next time I am abroad.

Clinique Take the Day Off Balm (4)

Clinique Take the Day Off Balm (1)

Clinique Take the Day Off Balm (3)

Is it safe to use on sensitive skin?

Absolutely! It is fragrance free which is a great plus. My skin can get very red and inflamed with the wrong products but I have had no adverse reaction at all. Ofcourse, if you are in doubt you could stop by a counter to try it our or ask for a sample.
      Hope this helps!

Unpretentious is a great way to describe it: it just does what it says on the tin without any fuss πŸ˜€

I’m sorry to hear that it’s not the easiest to find for you! It sounds really nice. I’ve been interested lately in cleansing balms (and other emollient-based cleansers), as my skin isn’t as oily as it used to be and I hate when cleansers leave my skin feeling stripped. Thanks for sharing your thoughts!!
I hope you’re doing well!! XO

Oh that tight feeling is just awful. I recently talked to a friend who said she didn’t feel a cleanser worked unless her skin felt like that (shudder).
This just leaves your skin feeling soft and clean πŸ™‚
Things are great here, finally enjoying some sunshine! How about you?

        Hehe. We shuttered together, lol.
I’m glad you’ve got some sun. We do here, as well. We’ve been enjoying the outdoors. I’m back to work today though, so I’ll see fresh air again on Tuesday evening, lol. Lots of love!

Lovely, I need to try this! So what else would you use with it? I use a pre cleanser, cleanser, serum, eye cream and moisturiser at the moment.xx

Roughly similar to your routine I guess: waterproof eye makeup remover, this cleansing balm, (acid tone once every couple of days), normal toner, serum, eye cream and moisturiser πŸ™‚
I prefer acid tone to a fysical scrub, but than depends on your skin I would say.

Very interesting! I didn’t know Clinique had a cleansing balm! The only one I’ve tried is Eve Lom and I hated it…partially because it had a super strong scent, so maybe I’d like this one better πŸ™‚ I’ll check it out!

I recently smelled the Eve Lom one in store and put it back immediately: I didn’t like it either!
This is very gentle and everything you want from a cleansing balm. You really have to hunt for it though, it isn’t displayed prominently at the counters πŸ™‚

Great review! Clinique is one of my favorite brands, but I haven’t really tried anything different from them other than their skin tone corrector serum and that was a bit too pricey for me. Also, I’ve never heard of balm cleansers… haha so thanks for your review! Can’t wait to see what other posts you have in store ^_^

Balm cleansers are the best: very soft and great for a gentle massage πŸ™‚ And they are really great at taking off heavy make-up. Give it a go, you might prefer it to a cream cleanser.
I don’t generally get along with Clinique that well, like you I find them a bit expensive and not always great for my sensitive skin. This stuff is amazing though πŸ˜€

Sounds great. I actually prefer products without fragrance as my skin is liable to freak out at the introduction of any new product

This is very soft and perfect for sensitive skin πŸ™‚ I don’t mind natural fragrances but I never understand why brands add perfume to skincare.

I am always happy to try new cleansers, even tho I have a few open already at the moment. But like you said different days call for different products. I will have to see if I can find this here in Korea.

I’m using a Korean one called Dr Oracle at the moment because it has salicylic acid in it and I needed something help control the breakouts. I also have a bamboo cleansing one for the shower but I can’t remember what brand that was. And I just started using the Holika Holika BB Soda Pore Cleansing Foam. It like it because it’s got little balls in it that scrub your face mildly to get the BB Cream off and then dissolve, I wasn’t sure if I was going to like it but I had some buffed in BB Cream in my pores the other day and it helped to clean everything up well.

Oh nice! I have an acid toner to help deal with impurities: that stuff is great right?!
Not sure I can get any of those brands here in europe, but they all sound lovely πŸ˜€
