Summer Essential: Facial Sunscreen

Now that spring has finally arrived and seems here to stay, let’s talk a little about protecting your face from the sun. We all love a bit of sunshine (and need it to produce vitamin D), but the sun can also do a great deal of damage to your skin. These days, we are all well aware of this and protect our skin from the sun using sunscreen, right?!

Facial Sunscreen: Estee Lauder, kiehl's and la roche-posay

I use facial sunscreen all year round, even in the darker winter months. With the spring finally here and the summer around the corner, this becomes even more important. Not all sunscreens work well with make-up however, and every year I go on a little quest to find my perfect facial sunscreen combining a high SPF protection with easy use underneath make-up.

Nothing is more irritating than applying sunscreen after your moisturiser, to find it makes your make-up patchy or produces those awful little roles. I have three current favorite sunscreens that work well for me.

Facial Sunscreen: Estee Lauder, kiehl's and la roche-posay

Estee Lauder Daywear Advanced Multi-Protection Anti-Oxidant &UV Defense SPF 50

This Estee Lauder product combines skincare with sunscreen. It has moisturising properties and a broad spectrum SPF 50. I apply this over my normal moisturiser as I have dry skin, but those with oily skin could use this as a moisturizer and sunscreen. I love the light weight texture and cucumber smell. Looks great underneath every foundation I have tried it with and the fact this is my third tube should tell you how much I like it. It retails for €39/$40/£34, so not cheap but very versatile.

Kiehl’s Ultra Light Daily UV Defense SPF 50

The new kid on the block, I bought this a few weeks ago as my Estee Lauder is running low and I wanted to try something new. I have only worn it a couple of times but so far, so good. Kiehl’s Daily UV Defense has a light weight texture and plays well with make-up. It does smell like sunscreen but doesn’t leave a white cast. I will do a full review of this in a few weeks time when i have truly put it through its paces, but first impressions are really good. It retails for €37/£31, so very similar to the Estee Lauder one but it does contain double the amount of product.

Facial Sunscreen: Estee Lauder, kiehl's and la roche-posay

La Roche-Posay Anthelios XL Melt-in Cream 50+

This is the sunscreen I use for a proper day at the beach. It doesn’t work well underneath make-up and leaves a little bit of a white cast on the face, but this stuff is properly good at protecting your face. Use when you need long lasting sun protection that will not budge. Retails for about €15 at pharmacies.

These are my current sunscreen favorites. I am always looking for new products, so please let me know about your favorites in the comments!

Actually no I don’t really have a favorite. I just have been trying different sample sized ones that I’ve received in beauty subscriptions lol. xxx

I apply my Body Shop face moisturizer/sunscreen over my normal moisturizer cause I have dry skin as well, so I’m probably going to really like that Estee Lauder one!

Oh the Estee Lauder one is so nice! I think Kiehl’s will be a decent cheaper alternative but I will miss the EL one 😀

Nice roundup! Weirdly enough I don’t actually have a face-specific sunscreen…my moisturizer and foundation both have lots of SPF and since I never leave the house without them, my face is always protected 😉 But I should really get one for long days at the beach when I need to reapply. I might go for the Estee Lauder one if it works the best with makeup!

I guess that works for most people! I am just very sensitive to sun spots and use chemical peels…so spf 50 it is!
Estee Lauder works well under makeup and doesn’t leave a whitish cast so that is quite nice!

I have to admit I am less rigorous in winter but i do try! Even though it feels like we never even see the sun for months, a bright winter’s day can do just as much damage!

Wow. I’m enamored with all three of these. I had an Estee Lauder that I *loved,* and I’m really interested in this Kiehl’s one. I need to bite the bullet and stock back up. I have a few sunscreens lying around, but they’re all in the 30 range. And, I’m with you. Sunscreen everyday!! XO

All three are lovely. I would say the Estee Lauder one really has some beneficial skincare benefits, the Kiehl’s is just a great sunscreen that works underneath makeup and the LRP is my beach pick.

I really like the Anthelios one! Is this the tinted one? I find it gives a nice bit of colour on the face, although leaving it a bit shiny.

It is a great series. This is just the normal version, does leave a little shine and sometimes a white cast, but I only use it for the beach where it doesn’t matter.

This is a really good post, so important to protect your face. I tend to wear makeup with an SPF day to day but I use the Boots No7 one when I’m on holiday without makeup in place of a moisturiser xx

It absolutely is! My skin is very senstitive to sun and I use chemical exfoliants, so i use a separate spf50 daily!
      Depends on your skin though.
Hope you have a lovely weekend Zoe!
