Best Base Coat for Weak Nails

A proper base coat is an absolute necessity if you love nail polish. Base coats are meant to protect your nails from discoloration, which is caused easily by bright or darker colors. The best base coats, however, also have nourishing and protecting qualities that help your nails look their best.

Essie Grow Stronger Base Coat

My absolutely favorite is the Essie Grow Stronger Base Coat. This base coat promises to make your nails stronger, smoother and more resilient to breaking.

The base coat is an almost invisible pale pink and it does a great job protecting against discoloration. I wear lots of blues and greens, color that easily leach into your nails, but I never have any issues with stained nails.

This really does seem to make my nails a little stronger. Obviously it doesn’t protect me from all breakage, but I definitely noticed the difference when I ran out of this base coat and tried something else. As you can imagine, I quickly changed back to this base coat.

The big bonus of having stronger nails is that it will make your manicures last longer: chips are often caused by weaker nails bending at the tips when pressure is applied.

Simply apply a thin coat of this base coat on clean nails and continue with your choice of polish. It dries quite quickly, so this really doesn’t require much extra time but gives great results.

I also use this as a sort of treatment: I apply just a thin layer of this to clean nails, leave for a day, remove and reapply for three consecutive days. Great if your nails need a little break from polish and the nude pink actually looks rather sophisticated.

I’m trying the Nailtiques formula myself, I have long nails & had one snap on me, right at the quik on both sides. It’s high, but I’ve heard such good things about it I’m gonna apply it every day for the duration it said (bout 3 weeks if I recall correctly) and see what condition there in at that time!

Plus my nails I keep them squared & I’m noticing there peeling on the sides on the free edge, this is supposed to help seal the layers back together 😳

I love to keep them as square as possible as well, just the strongest shape I think 😀
Let me know how you get on with it!

Well, this might just do the trick for you 🙂 Be sure to give it a little while to work though, it won’t do overnight miracles but long term you will see the benefits 🙂

I might have to give this ago – I’ve had a bottle of nail envy from OPI which is proving to last years, my nails don’t break very easily now – but they still don’t “feel strong” x

My nails are soooo weak and thin. They peel constantly, I can literally bend them in half when they actually manage to grow long enough. They’re essentially paper covering my finger tips. So a basecoat that is meant to strengthen is actually SUPER helpful and necessary for me if I want nail polish to last more than a day (i kid you not. I get chips after approximately 12 hours). I love all of the essie colors so i would expect this product to be just as wonderful. Thanks for sharing!

Mine were that way when they just grew out after years of nail biting. Consistent application of base coat has helped a lot, as well as hydrating with nail oil. I always wear several coats of polish, as this supports weak nails as well.
It will take a while though, you cannot expect a base coat to work instantly. Give it a little while!

Thanks for the tip! I’m working on trying to stop biting and the thing I’ve noticed that works best is well hydrated nails and cuticles along with a really good manicure. So thin might actually help kick me even further into gear.

Exactly: as long as they look really pretty it is difficult to bite them 🙂 And I found the color helped, bringing a red nail up to my mouth is much easier to notice!

Yes! I use neon colors all summer just so I’m super aware of where they are!

I can’t believe how long it took me to figure out that base coats are essential to protect your nails from discoloration. But now I will never ever ever go back! Live and learn, right? 😉 Have a fab weekend, Anne!

I have never tried this but sounds good! I always use a base coat and OPI nail envy has been my staple for years as it nourishes and strengthens the nail. Have you tried nail envy? Next time to see an Essie stand I am going to look for this as I love trying new nail care products! Xx
