Virtual House Tour

Last week I shared the exciting news that I am moving into a new apartment next month and I promised I would do a little tour of my current place.

house tour

I live in a typical Dutch monumental building called a ‘hofje’, which translates as courtyard. These almshouses were build from the Middle Ages onwards by rich individuals to house the elderly poor, often women. An early private form of social security.

house tour

As you can imagine, these houses are very atmospheric. I have massive high ceilings, lovely big windows, a beautiful old fireplace and an amazing shared courtyard with amazing neighboors.

house tour

The downside? They are very small and the modernization has created some weird quirks: I have no separate bathroom, but a shower cubicle in my kitchen. I haven’t photographed that, but you can see my little space for make-up and skincare right here. I just can’t wait for a space to put a proper dressing table.

My bedroom is also rather small, so it essentially consists of my bed (with a beautiful quilt made by my mom) and a wardrobe.

house tour

Still, I have realized I will miss this place quite a bit. My new flat is the polar opposite: a new build with massive amounts of space but little of the old and quirky elements that make this place so special to live in.

I am preparing the move as we speak, so I will be sharing some ideas for my new place in the coming weeks.

This place looks so cozy and cute! But I imagine the kitchen shower could be a bit of a pain. Good luck with the move, I’m excited to see the new place! I’m sure it will feel wonderful to have extra space πŸ™‚

Omg this is so charming and so beautiful!!! I just love it. I live in a southwestern style Mediterranean home in Phoenix. It’s like night and day. I love it but it doesn’t have the beautiful character and charm and gardens omg!

That sounds amazing as well, I love that typical southwestern architecture in the States πŸ™‚ You always want what you can’t have right πŸ˜‰

It’s really charming. Yes, if you have straight hair, you want curly. Maybe I’ll do a photo tour of my place but I wasn’t sure like would people want to see that? I really liked seeing yours but it’s so unique and almost fairytale like. I live around rocks and lizards and stuff. I just put lizard food out today. LOL hoping they will come.

So quaint and such a foreign concept to a city dweller like me! I wish we had a courtyard. Our buildings are also not very old. Thanks for sharing! Good luck with the move.

Fun fact: technically Leiden is a city πŸ˜‰ In the medieval sense anyway as it has city walls, city rights and a university. I get what you mean though, this is not a big city by any means.
The courtyard is unique but do you at least have a balcony or some outside space?
