Worth the Hype? Hourglass Ambient Lighting Palette

Hourglass Ambient Lighting Palette Dim Light Incandescent Light Radiant LIght

Some products receive so much attention and love on beauty blogs and instagram that it can be a really difficult not to simply order it online immediately. The lovely hourglass powders are definitely one of these and though I was extremely tempted by the Christmas Limited Edition Palette, I struggled as I had never had a chance to see these powders in real life. At this price point, it is quite the dilemma.

Luckily for me – and perhaps unfortunately for my budget – I ran into an hourglass counter at Space NK in Edinburgh and could swatch these powders for the first time. Love at first sight for me and I ended up taking the classic Hourglass Ambient Lighting Palette home with me.

This palette is a true cult classic that contains three ambient powders. Dim Light is a neutral peach that gives a lovely radiant glow. Incandescent light is an ivory highlighter and exclusive to this palette. Radiant light is a warmer beige bronzer, though deeper skin tones could perhaps use this as an overall setting powder.

Needless to say, I couldn’t wait to use this. I was getting ready for work on a dark winter morning in January, grabbed my powder brush and applied dim light all over my face as a setting powder. I looked in the mirror and was rather disappointed to see a finish similar to my normal Chanel loose powder. I biked into work and forgot all about it until I visited the ladies room with its awful TL fluorescent lights. Normally I look like an extra from Walking Dead, but now my skin actually looked great! Turns out these powders need a little light to really give you that great radiant glow.

Tried to capture the radiance of Dim Light!

I have worn Dim Light almost non-stop since January and I absolutely love it. The effect of these powders is subtle, which explains my initial disappointment, yet effective at making my skin look its best. Like you’ve had a facial the day before or stepped up your skincare routine. The highlighter is amazing and I might even get over my distaste for bronzer in the spring.

This radiant glow does come at a high end price. The Ambient Lighting Palette retails for $62 / £56 / €74. I am not even going to pretend that is affordable, this is definitely something to put on a gift list or save up for. The separate compacts represent an even better value for money, so that might be an option if you are looking for a setting powder and live near a counter so you can test the different shades. Despite the softness of the powder, you only use very little and based on my use so far it will take a good long while to make a dent in this magical powder.

It this worth the hype? Definitely, but whether you feel you can afford to spend this much money for a subtle difference it totally up to you. Personally, I can’t wait to see their next limited edition palette for the holidays.

Great review! I’ve been holding off using my Houglass powder for a long time (guess I’m trying to use up other powders, but powder takes forever to finish!) but I think I should give it a try now!

Thanks! Finishing powders is a bit of a nightmare…always takes forever. I would love to finish some sooner to have an excuse to go shopping again. Def. give this a go, I just love it.

The nice thing about the powders is that at least they last a very long time 🙂

It’s so lovely isn’t it? Very subtle but that just makes it seem even more natural. I’ll have to try out the Dim Light in fluorescent lighting and see if I have the same reaction. You have such a gorgeous glow in that picture!

It is just the best. Weird how something so subtle can make a big difference. And do try the fluorescent lights, would love to know if you have the same reaction! xo Anne

These powders are extremely subtle but I can 100% tell the difference if I don’t have it on. I just look healthier with a little bit of Diffused Light.

Weird but true: these are subtle but have a big difference. Diffused light would be my next pick, that one sounds lovely as well 🙂

Oh yes, it took some deep breaths to get over that. I have read it takes forever to finish though, so I am really hoping that is true.

I did the same, it is a little expensive so I wanted to make sure it was worth it before I purchased. Happy I did though. Do you have a counter nearby to check it out in person? xo Anne

Dim Light has been on my wish list for AGES. I don’t like too much shimmer but I want that “lit from within” glow (cliche, but yes) I suspect the effect is similar to that of the Guerlain Meterorites… hence the cult status. I’m still waiting for a drugstore brand to dupe the Hourglass! 😛

Oh it delivers on the cliche lit from within glow. I don’t own the Guerlain versions, but from what i have swatched so far those are a bit more out there with glitter and glow. This is a little more refined.
Haven’t seen a proper drugstore dupe, they simply add glitter like that will help 😉

What a fabulous review! I agree that it is such a great product and I would be further pleased if it doesn’t carry a hefty price tag.

I wish this had worked out for me but sadly it made me look super oily. A great palette though!

I have combination skin so sometimes the glow gets to be too much, lol. I think it’s a lovely product but it just wasn’t for me. 😦

I can imagine. I have been playing around with it and find it works better with certain foundations. Not surprised skintype is also a major factor.
