Caring for weak nails

caring for weak nails with herome glass nail file and essie

My nails have been acting up horribly these past few months. I have to admit that the amount of typing I have been doing hasn’t been easy for them, but it is no excuse for continuing to split at the weirdest places or just breaking completely. I hope I have found the answer though.

My proper glass nail file broke a while ago, so I replaced it with a cheaper brand. I wasn’t really happy with it, but have been so busy I kept forgetting to replace it. When I sat down last week and analysed why my nails were suddenly splitting and breaking, this was the one major change in my routine I could think of.

Obviously, I went online and ordered a proper file straight away. I ended up going with the travel-sized Glass Nail File by Herome, as a friend had this and I really liked how sharp it was. It comes with a cute velvet cover and a convenient travel case. I just hope careful filing and proper shaping will make my nails a little stronger.

This isn’t going to happen overnight, so I have ramped up the rest of my nail care routine to help speed up the process a little. I always use Essie’s Grow Stronger base coat (and have for a while) and I will be using my Essie Apricot Cuticle Oil a little more often to help my nails grow. Clearly, my love of Essie knows no bounds.

Do you have any other tips for me? I would love to hear what helps you take best care of your nails.

Vitamin supplements might help! Or taking a break from nail polish for awhile…which is obviously a huge bummer 😦 I don’t know if you can get Julep products in Europe, but their Oxygen Nail Treatment is really nice.

Great tips! I tried the nail polish break already, but it just makes then break faster because they are no longer protected by the polish -_- Julep is tricky here, but I will look into that one.

I have really bendy nails! LOL. Not sure if it’s a blessing or a curse. They tend to split but not break.

The Herome glass file is pretty! The end of it looks a lot like the Essie file, which is the one I use and love. Glass files are awesome, aren’t they? Can’t ever go back to emery boards.

Mine are the same: though the splitting can drive me mad.
I does look rather similar to the essie version which I actually wanted but couldn’t find here (we have entire essie displays, just not the file for some reason?!) xx Anne

The 2nd best thing I’ve ever done for my nails was to stop buffing them. However, I still use my buffer regularly. πŸ™‚

Here comes the best thing I’ve ever done for my nails: Everytime I’m done filing my nails (and actually every time before I paint them) I buff the tips. Just the tips. If you buff the tips you’ll notice how even and smooth they’ll become. And once the tips are all even and smooth there’s no chance to rip a nail randomly. πŸ™‚ Of course, buffing your tips won’t prevent certain nail accidents – but it prevents those pesky little tears (which ultimately lead to ripping and breakage) from forming in the first place. Try it, I’m sure you’ll love it! xx

Oh what a great tip!!! I never buffed my nails to begin with, but I love the idea of buffing just the tips to get an extra smooth finish. Will definitely try this πŸ˜€
